Rock of Ages - National Tour

A rock musical with the greatest hits of the '80s.

Justin Colombo on the Pleasure of 'Dangling His Nunchucks' in Rock of Ages on Tour

As the zany narrator of Rock of Ages, which opens at Ottawa's National Arts Centre on March 5 and runs through March 10, Justin Colombo delivers his share of dirty jokes and pratfalls. While training to be an actor, however, Colombo imagined himself quoting sonnets rather than 80s rock songs.

“When I was in college, I studied Shakespeare, Chekhov and Ibsen," the actor told "I was also lucky enough to study Stanislavski and Chekhov at the Moscow Art Theatre. But here I am in Rock of Ages, slinging poop jokes and singing Whitesnake and loving every minute of it."

Despite taking a different direction in theater than planned, Colombo said he finds comfort in the hit musical’s comedic tone. “Because we’re travelling so much and constantly trying to find normalcy on the road, being crazy and weird is wonderful,” the actor said of playing his free-spirited character, Lonny. “I have found the best way to spend your time after a long day on a bus is to throw on some tattoos, a mullet and dangle your nunchucks in front of an unsuspecting audience member’s face.”

Rock of Ages takes audiences back to the times of big bands with even bigger hair. The Tony-nominated musical features songs from Journey, Bon Jovi, REO Speedwagon and more, including “Don’t Stop Believin’,” “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Can’t Fight This Feeling.”

Rock of Ages is about following your dreams, but most importantly, it’s about allowing those dreams to change, because they will,” Colombo said. “I get to be a rock star every night. What could be better than that? Probably winning a Super Bowl, but I’m OK with being a rock star every night.”
